Power steering pump

Power steering is the feature in modern cars that allows the driver of a car to direct the vehicle without exerting the effort it would require to physically turn the wheel. In a power steering system, movements made on the steering wheel cause fluid pressure inside the hydraulic pump to move to one side or the other of the pump. This pressure causes a piston to move, and that piston directs the gears to steer the car.

  • Whining noise while turning the wheel
  • Steering wheel slow to respond
  • Stiff steering wheel
  • Groaning noises are the worst noises your power steering pump can make.
  • Squealing noises when the vehicle starts.
  • It could be a leak in the power steering pump or the fluid level could be low.
  • You can drive a vehicle without power steering, but it’s difficult and unsafe. Repair or replace the pump as soon as possible.
  • If the power steering system fails from lack of fluid it can damage the whole system including the steering rack and lines.
